SUMMARY:Holiday Wellness: Protecting Your Well-being in a Season of Stress CLE # 540605
DESCRIPTION:Ahh\, the holidays. For many of us\, we arrive into late November and early December with a mix of emotions. Excitement\, trepidation\, hope\, stress\, and many other feelings might arrive all at once. Some are welcome\, some are uninvited. If we have perfectionistic tendencies regarding our expectations of our own performance in hosting\, cooking\, and working\, anxiety might be the first to arrive at the table. \nCome and explore these common stressors with us during this timely and relevant holiday. SUMMARY:Perfecting Without Perfectionism: How to How to Strive for Excellence (in 2026 and Beyond) Without Getting Overwhelmed with Unrealistic Ideals
DESCRIPTION:On the cusp of a new year\, we may be thinking of all kinds of ways to improve our life and our legal practice. Perhaps\, this is the year that we try a different\, non-perfectionistic approach. After all\, perfectionism may not be the steady friend we hoped. Let’s take a deep dive into perfectionism together and try to determine whether it is friend or foe. We’ll examine the latest data on lawyers and perfectionism and draw distinctions between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism. If you’re feeling ready for a brighter way to approach work and life\, join us for this CLE. Registration here

SUMMARY:Clients in Crisis\, CLE # 541844 (One Ethics Credit Sought)
DESCRIPTION:The last few years have disrupted lawyers’ professional and personal lives. Attorneys may feel like their lives seem out of control\, yet they are not alone in feeling the effects of a pandemic\, economic downturn\, or political divisiveness. Clients are affected too. Attorneys must manage their own emotions while simultaneously being sensitive and responsive to their clients. This program will identify normal feelings\, reactions\, and behaviors\, and recognize when they are cause for concern. For some clients\, reactions may rise to the level of impairment. Impairment comes in many forms\, including substance use\, addiction\, or other mental impairments. It is not a lawyer’s job to diagnose\, yet a lawyer must act accordingly. What is the lawyer’s role\, responsibility\, and opportunity when working with a potentially impaired client? What if the issue is not with a client but with a colleague? The answers are seldom simple and never easy. This program will provide an ethical framework as well as practical guidance and resources for lawyers facing these questions. SUMMARY:Managing Stress Mindfully\, CLE #540619 (Patty Devoy\, Client Services Director LCL)
DESCRIPTION:It is no secret that being a lawyer can be incredibly stressful. Trying to manage difficult clients\, complex cases\, and demanding deadlines while having a life outside of work can feel impossible at times. Left unchecked\, stress can have severe impacts on our physical and mental health and on a lawyer’s ability to comply with ethical obligations related to competence\, diligence\, and communication. This program will not only teach lawyers about the health risks related to stress\, but how mindfulness and meditation can help with reducing the risk of stress-related problems in their law practice to allow lawyers to thrive personally and professionally.  Lawyers will also learn how to identify signs of stress in themselves and in their colleagues along with practical strategies and resources for supporting well-being in the workplace. Attendees will also experience a brief guided body scan as an introduction to meditation along with resources for managing stress and developing a consistent mindfulness practice. SUMMARY:Secondary Trauma in Legal Practice CLE #540622
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to educate attorneys about secondary traumatic stress and how it can adversely affect the attorney. It is based upon the understanding that working with traumatized individuals is part of many attorney’s professional practices. Indeed\, many of us spend considerable time with victims of trauma\, either learning their stories in person or through secondary sources like reports\, photographs\, recordings\, interviews with others and through pretrial and trial testimony. These interactions can take a significant emotional toll of the professional\, particularly with repeated exposure over time. \nWe will discuss primary and secondary trauma\, mental health conditions that can result in untreated secondary traumatic stress\, and strategies to address our exposure. SUMMARY:Toxic Workplace Environments: What They Are\, How They Affect Lawyers\, and Helpful Harm-Minimization Strategies CLE # 545984
DESCRIPTION:Many attorneys\, across various practice settings\, have encountered at least one unhealthy or toxic workplace setting. This CLE is designed to unmask the experience and set forth how those experiences can negatively impact us and our ethical obligations to our clients. This CLE is designed to talk about the most common communication patterns\, acts\, and slights that might undermine an attorney’s psychological safety and erode trust and ethical judgment in result. We’ll talk about the zone of tolerance and how toxic work environments may result in us getting stuck in hyper or hypo-aroused states and thus\, make it hard for us to get our work done. This CLE will talk about strategies to minimize the harm of working in such a setting\, how to set and enforce communication boundaries\, and how to engage in self-care when you feel under attack. Services offered by and through LCL will be discussed as a viable strategy to get through difficult times with adequate support. (One standard credit applied for)

SUMMARY:Ethically Enhancing Workplace Well-being with Self-compassion\, Gratitude and Joy (CLE #545818)
DESCRIPTION:Self-compassion means showing yourself the same kindness\, care\, and support you would show a friend in need. Gratitude means appreciating what you have rather than longing for what you don’t have. Joy is a state of mind and heart that at its core is about celebrating the connection between ourselves and others. Although self-compassion\, gratitude\, and joy have distinct qualities and practices\, they are intertwined in a beautiful way that can shift how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. They can improve stress management skills\, deepen professional relationships\, and enhance compliance with various ethics rules including competence\, diligence\, and communication. This presentation addresses the foundation of each practice\, how to apply them to our personal and professional lives as attorneys\, and the scientific benefits of doing so. There are also opportunities for written reflection exercises and two brief guided meditations throughout to illustrate the value of these practices. (One ethics credit sought)

SUMMARY:Career Transitions: Reflection Before Action
DESCRIPTION:Career Transitions: Reflection Before Action \n\n\n\nDescription\n\nThis interactive workshop is designed specifically for lawyers and legal professionals who are contemplating a job or career transition and want the time\, structure\, and guidance to think it through thoughtfully before making their next move. SUMMARY:Better Boundaries\, Better Lawyering\, CLE # 546555 (One ethics credit applied for)
DESCRIPTION:The legal profession is known for its stress-inducing environment: demanding hours\, high caseloads\, tight deadlines and its adversarial nature. Add in client expectations\, the culture of overwork and the personality of most lawyers\, and exhaustion and burnout can result. Where does this leave us in our ethical duties to our clients when exhaustion is part of our everyday? How do we prevent it from setting in at the first instance? This seminar will explore key factors contributing to stress\, anxiety\, and burnout\, focusing on the many ways in which weak boundaries and poor communication are key contributors. We will answer such questions as what is burnout\, how do weak boundaries contribute to burnout\, and what are our ethical obligations to our clients most often compromised on the way to burnout. Additionally\, lawyers will learn the importance of boundary setting in client relationships\, relationships with colleagues and co-counsel\, and in the sometimes stress-inducing relationship with opposing counsel. We will also discuss how to work with the court to set boundaries that will preserve our mental health\, without prejudicing our client’s position. The applicable ethical rules will be discussed and applied. Finally\, the presentation will provide strategies and guidance for attorneys and firms/offices to better equip themselves to handle professional and personal stressors and will provide information about pertinent resources\, including Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers \, EAPs and other supports available to assist attorneys and their staff with these complicated issues. SUMMARY:Help for Colleagues in Crisis CLE # 546556
DESCRIPTION:Mental health and addiction issues are a serious problem in the legal profession. Stigma about these conditions stands in the way of asking for or offering help. This program is designed for colleagues and managers who may observe changes in behavior that give rise to concerns. It discusses how to recognize and obtain help when you\, a work colleague\, or another professional colleague may have a substance use\, mental health\, or other issue that affects behavior\, conduct\, and performance. Topics include understanding the issues\, special considerations for remote work\, approaching the lawyer (including interventions)\, arranging assistance such as treatment\, and practice management issues during and following a reduced work schedule or leave of absence. Colleagues can save careers\, families\, and lives by taking action. This course is designed to educate attorneys to identify colleagues who may be suffering from chemical health or mental health related impairment. By educating attorneys about the misconceptions surrounding chemical health and mental health issues\, they will be better positioned to eliminate barriers to hiring\, retention\, professional development\, and full participation of attorneys disabled by chemical or mental health issues.
