SUMMARY:Trauma‑Informed Lawyering as Bias Reduction\, Applying Empathy to Reduce Bias in Legal Practice (CLE #548735)(One Elimination of Bias Credit Sought)
DESCRIPTION:A history of trauma can have long term consequences that affect the way individuals communicate\, remember events\, carry themselves\, interact with their attorneys and appear as witnesses. This CLE explores how our role as attorneys requires that we learn to decipher ambiguous behavior and ask compassionate and understanding questions of these clients. We will explore trauma informed interviewing procedures to adopt practices that make space for our clients to tell their stories and feel heard. We will also discuss bias that can show up during the intake process\, case development\, and trial strategy. Finally\, we’ll help participants understand how their ethical obligations require them to understand and employ trauma-informed practices as part of their professional competency and in doing so\, avoid further harm to their clients. SUMMARY:Ethical Dangers of Isolation (CLE #549376)(Pending one ethics credit)
DESCRIPTION:Loneliness and isolation present an urgent public health challenge\, prompting the U.S. Surgeon General to issue a public health advisory to urge the nation’s immediate awareness and action.  As lawyers\, we have been identified as the loneliest workers in America\, and our isolation presents a significant risk to our mental and physical health and our ability to conform to our professional obligations.  This program explores some of the causes and effects of isolation\, the impact on our professional responsibilities\, and ways we can address both causes and effects of isolation by building a culture of connection and mutual care in the legal profession.  (One Minnesota Ethics Credit sought) Free registration: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/U0aEzN14R0S90fAIRNUOnw
