SUMMARY:Behind the Mask: Implicit Bias\, Mental Health and the Hidden Struggles of legal Professionals CLE #534002 (One elimination of bias credit sought)
DESCRIPTION:We carry around an invisible\, and often times undetectable\, list of preconceived notions regarding people and the world in which we practice. Those preconceived notions act silently to guide our interactions with our clients\, their legal matters\, the court\, the jury and sometimes\, the administration of justice. Join us for this thoughtful presentation of exactly what implicit bias is and how it can interfere with our ability to be our best selves as lawyers. Learn to recognize it and “add friction” to your own decision-making to work towards its elimination. Learn how the legal community may have its own preconceived notions of mental health difficulties and how that can discourage someone to get help when they need it. Learn how to set aside your own biases and become intentional about the way you talk about mental health. (Sarah MacGillis\, presenting) Free registration.

SUMMARY:Understanding Racial Trauma and Its Effects (1.5 EOB Credits)
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to educate attorneys about the traumatic effect of the disparate treatment experienced by members of our BIPOC community which can affect the attorney’s best practices during representation. Dr. Daricarrere is a licensed clinical psychologist who performs immigration evaluations for individuals seeking asylum in the United States. In that capacity and in his private clinical practice as a licensed therapist\, he is qualified to understand the unique trauma experienced by individuals because of race and other historical experiences. He will share that considerable knowledge with the attendees in the hope that they will improve their understanding of the impact of racial trauma on BIPOC clients\, legal professionals\, as well as others. As a 27-year practicing attorney\, Ms. MacGillis will shed light on her observations of bias and prejudice in the legal profession\, and within the criminal justice system as well as the statutes and rules that are designed to prevent it. Special attention will be paid to the effects of racial trauma and how it may present in the legal setting in the practicing attorney and/or his or her clients. This program also hopes to acknowledge and support colleagues who have faced racial trauma and experienced its aftermath.  (1 1/2 Elimination of Bias Credits Sought) Free registration here
