Breaking the Silence: Mental Health and Substance Use in the Legal Profession (Pending One Elimination of Bias Credit, CLE # 552564)
Mental health conditions and substance use disorder can materially impair our ability to practice with reasonable skill and diligence. In the legal profession, professionals are reluctant to seek help for these conditions because of the associated stigma and because they erroneously believe that they suffer uniquely. This CLE will explore common mental health conditions and addictions focusing on the reported data regarding its prevalence in the legal community and the extent to which our own biases about individuals with mental health conditions may frustrate help seeking behavior. We will discuss the implicit biases we may hold about addiction or impairment, mental health difficulties, and stress. (Jon Tynjala, Executive Director, presenting) Free registration
